I've been making these cookies with my family ever since I could reach the counter... and maybe even a bit before that. Everyone in my family just loves them, and I particularly enjoy the versatility you get with the spices and sugar mixture. I like to add colored sugar and nutmeg, but you can add just about anything.



½ cup butter (one stick, room temperature)

½ cup butter-flavored Crisco

1 ½ cups sugar

2 eggs

2 ¾ cups flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

Mixture:

4 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon

dash of nutmeg



Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix shortening and sugar thoroughly with mixer. Add eggs and mix again. Blend flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Stir in with shortening mixture. Shape into 1 inch balls, using a small scoop for uniformity. Roll in sugar/cinnamon/nutmeg mixture. Place two inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Less baking time yields a softer cookie. These cookies will puff up during baking, then flatten out.

Makes about 6 dozen doodles.
